The first time you open it
This version of Unpixel isn’t notarized by Apple yet, so the first time you open it macOS shows “Unpixel” Not Opened with a message that Apple could not verify it. You approve it once in System Settings — it takes about thirty seconds on macOS 26:
- Open Unpixel from your Applications folder. When the alert appears, click Done (not Move to Trash).
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down to the Security section. You’ll see “Unpixel” was blocked to protect your Mac. Click Open Anyway.
- Confirm with Touch ID or your password, then click Open Anyway in the dialog that follows.
You only need to do this once per version. Only approve copies you downloaded from this website.
macOS says Unpixel can’t be opened?
Unpixel is signed and notarized by Apple, so it should open normally. If macOS still blocks it, the download may be incomplete — delete it and download again. Still blocked? Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway next to the Unpixel message, and email us so we can look into it.
Screen Recording permission
macOS asks for Screen Recording permission for any app that reads pixels from the screen. Unpixel uses it only at the moment you release a selection, and only for the area you selected. If captures come back empty:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Make sure Unpixel is switched on. If it isn’t listed, click + and choose it from Applications.
- Quit Unpixel from its menu bar icon and open it again — macOS often applies the change only after a relaunch.
Your license
- Lost your key? It’s in the confirmation email from Dodo Payments, and in the customer portal — sign in with the email you used to buy.
- New Mac? On the old one, open Settings → License and choose Deactivate This Mac, then activate on the new one. If the old Mac is gone, email us and we’ll free the slot.
- “Already active on all of its Macs”? Your key is in use on as many Macs as it allows. Deactivate it on a Mac you no longer use, or buy another license.
Uninstalling
Quit Unpixel from the menu bar, then drag it from Applications to the Trash. To remove your capture history and settings as well, delete ~/Library/Application Support/Unpixel. To use your key on another Mac, choose Settings → License → Deactivate This Mac before you uninstall.
