How to copy text from a PDF that won’t let you select it

Scanned pages, broken text layers and image-only PDFs, explained — and how to get the text out on a Mac.

Quick answer If a PDF won’t let you select text, it’s usually a scan (the page is a picture), or the text layer is broken. Run it through text recognition: screenshot the page and use Live Text, or press ⇧⌘2 with Unpixel and drag over the text. To get every page at once, open the whole PDF with Unpixel’s Open Image….

You click and drag, and nothing highlights. Or it highlights, but pasting gives you fi-ligatures, random symbols or one letter per line. Here’s why that happens and how to fix it on a Mac.

First, find out what kind of PDF you have

To check restrictions in Preview, choose Tools → Show Inspector and look at the document’s encryption and permission details.

Method 1: Live Text in Preview

Depending on your macOS version and the file, Preview may be able to recognize text on a scanned page. Open the PDF, choose the Text Selection tool and try dragging across a line. If it highlights, copy as usual. If not, use one of the next methods.

Method 2: Screenshot the page, then Live Text

  1. Zoom the PDF so the text is comfortably large (150–200% helps with small print).
  2. Press ⌃⇧⌘4 and drag over the passage. The screenshot goes to your clipboard.
  3. In Preview, choose File → New from Clipboard, drag across the text and press ⌘C.

Method 3: Unpixel — a passage or the whole document

For a passage: press ⇧⌘2 and drag over it in any PDF viewer — Preview, your browser, Acrobat, a document portal. The text lands on your clipboard when you let go.

For the whole file: click Unpixel in the menu bar and choose Open Image…, then pick the PDF (or drop it on the menu bar icon). Unpixel reads up to 50 pages and copies the text in page order, with a blank line between pages.

Turn off Keep line breaks in Settings → Recognition when you want flowing paragraphs: Unpixel joins the lines of each paragraph and re-joins words hyphenated across a line break, so “docu-
ment” comes back as “document”.

Tips

  • Tables: capture one column at a time if rows come back merged.
  • Numbers matter: double-check amounts, IBANs and dates against the original before you send or file anything.
  • Mixed languages: automatic detection works well; if a page mixes scripts, pinning the main language can help.
  • Faint scans: use Accurate mode, and zoom in before capturing.

A note on restricted PDFs

Copy restrictions are usually there for a reason. If it’s your own document, the simplest fix is to ask the sender for an unrestricted copy. Only extract text you have the right to use.
