Privacy Policy

Unpixel recognizes text on your Mac and keeps it there. Here’s exactly what stays local and the little that doesn’t.

Effective October 12, 2026

The short version Unpixel reads your screen on your Mac and keeps everything there. We don’t have accounts, analytics or ads. The only data that leaves your Mac is your license key and your Mac’s name and model when you activate (and the license key when it’s re-checked), sent to our payment provider, Dodo Payments — plus an ordinary request to this website when the app checks for updates.

Who we are

Unpixel is made and sold by TODO: Your full legal name or company name, TODO: Street address, City, Postcode, Country (“we”, “us”). Questions about privacy: support@getunpixel.app.

Purchases are processed by Dodo Payments, which acts as our Merchant of Record — the reseller that handles payment, tax and invoicing for each order. Dodo Payments processes your payment details under its own privacy policy, which is shown at checkout.

What the app does with your screen

  • Captures are user-initiated. Unpixel reads the screen only when you start a capture (shortcut, menu or URL), and only the rectangle you select, at the moment you release it. It does not record video and never captures in the background.
  • Recognition happens on your Mac. Text, QR codes and barcodes are recognized with Apple’s on-device Vision framework. The captured image is held in memory while it’s read and then discarded. It is never saved to disk and never uploaded.
  • The result goes to your clipboard, like any copy you make yourself.
  • Images and PDFs you open (Open Image…, From Clipboard, drag and drop) are read the same way, locally.
  • Screen Recording permission is required by macOS for any app that reads screen pixels. Unpixel uses it only as described above.

What the app stores on your Mac

  • Capture history — the recognized text, its type (text, link or code), the name of the app it came from and the time — in ~/Library/Application Support/Unpixel/. You can limit its size, clear it, or switch history off in Settings → History. It never leaves your Mac.
  • Settings, such as your shortcut and recognition options, in the standard macOS preferences system.
  • License details — your license key, the activation ID for this Mac, the product you bought and the name and email address returned by Dodo Payments on activation — in your macOS Keychain, so Unpixel can show who it’s licensed to and stay activated.

When you buy

Checkout is hosted by Dodo Payments. To complete the order they collect details such as your name, email address, billing country or address and payment information, and they issue your license key and receipt. We receive order information from Dodo Payments — your name, email address, country, the product, the amount, the order ID and the license key — so we can deliver your license, provide support, handle refunds and keep the records that tax and accounting law requires. We never see or store your full card details.

This website

  • No cookies, no analytics and no third-party trackers are used on this site.
  • Our hosting provider may keep short-lived server logs (such as IP address, browser user agent and the page requested) to operate and secure the site.
  • After checkout, Dodo Payments sends you to our thank-you page with your order ID, status, email address and license key in the address. That information is read by your browser to display your key; the page then removes it from the address bar. It is not sent to us or anyone else from that page, and it is kept only in your browser tab’s session storage until you close the tab.

Email

If you email us, we use your message and address to help you, and keep the conversation as long as needed for support and our records. We don’t send marketing email unless you’ve explicitly asked for it.

Legal bases (EEA/UK)

We process order and license information to perform our contract with you (delivering and supporting your license), and to meet legal obligations (tax and accounting). We process support emails based on our legitimate interest in helping you.

How long we keep data

Order and license records are kept for as long as your license is active and for as long as tax and accounting rules require afterwards (often 6–10 years, depending on the country). Support emails are deleted when no longer needed. Everything stored by the app on your Mac stays under your control.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to complain to your local data-protection authority. Email support@getunpixel.app and we’ll respond within 30 days. Requests about payment data held by Dodo Payments can also be made to them directly. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising.

Children

Unpixel isn’t directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we don’t knowingly collect their personal data.

International transfers

Dodo Payments and our hosting provider may process data in countries other than yours. Where required, they rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the effective date above, and for significant changes we’ll say so on this page and in the release notes.
